Ramsey County is putting its money where its mouth is when it comes to tackling the housing crisis, with an $18.4 million investment aimed at increasing the stock of affordable homes. As part of its 2025 Housing Development Solicitation, the county intends to bolster the creation, preservation, and subsidy of over 1,400 housing units. The unanimous approval by the Ramsey County Board of Commissioners and the Housing and Redevelopment Authority Board sets a significant milestone for the housing landscape.
The financial breakdown includes a substantial $11.9 million slice from Local Affordable Housing Aid, with the Housing and Redevelopment Levy chipping in another $5.7 million and State Affordable Housing Aid pitching $739,000. Despite the growing need for housing in Ramsey County, 200 units are specifically set aside for residents making less than 30% of the area's median income, which makes a dent in the region’s deeply affordable housing deficit.
In a statement released by Ramsey County's official website, County Commissioner and HRA Chair Mai Chong Xiong highlighted the significance of the projects, "Housing is about more than buildings, it’s about giving families a strong, stable foundation." Matching the sentiment, Board Chair Rafael E. Ortega remarked on the broader economic benefits by stating the initiatives will help in "build the economy and strengthen neighborhoods."
The funding strategy is a demonstration of effort to mesh local and state resources to endorse equity, economic mobility, and enhance community well-being. The county anticipates doling out additional awards through the 2025 solicitation before the year is out, promising more good news for those in search of affordable housing. According to a statement, the county is looking forward to these further project endorsements as part of its ongoing mission to address the housing crisis in the community.
