The Department of Water announced that repairs to the Hanalei Water System have been completed. The system, which had a major pump motor failure earlier this year, was fully restored last Saturday. All pipes, valves, and switches are now functioning properly, according to the County of Kauai.

The water system serving the 250,000-gallon storage tank at Maka Ridge experienced a pump motor failure at the Department of Water’s Maka Ridge Pump Station on April 4. As a result, Princeville Utilities Company Inc. provided emergency water supplies to Hanalei and ʻAnini Beach. "After overcoming significant challenges related to manufacturing, shipping and extensive repairs, the Department of Water has successfully restored the Hanalei Water System to dependable and safe operation," said Joe Tait, Department of Water's Manager and Chief Engineer, as reported by the County of Kauai.

The Department of Water announced that water conservation requests for the Hanalei area, which began in April, were lifted earlier this month following the restoration of the Hanalei Water System. The system was brought back to normal operations with the assistance of local contractors, including Derrick and Cynthia Moreira of Derrick's Well Drilling & Pump Services LLC. Department of Water stated, "Their ability to prioritize this project, mobilize quickly, and provide the replacement pump and appurtenances, enabled DOW to restore the Hanalei Water System to normal operations in a very short timeframe." Brad Suizu, Princeville Utilities Company Inc. manager, also played a role in maintaining water service during the system outage.
