The City of San Antonio is rolling out the welcome mat for a series of free events downtown this August. In a press release, the city beckoned residents to Houston Street, Historic Market Square, and La Villita Historic Arts Village to revel in the summer's end festivities and back-to-school celebrations. Browsers and buyers alike are encouraged to pop into the local stores to hunt for unique finds while there's a cluster of family-friendly entertainment outside, as reported by the City of San Antonio.
Kicking things off on August 2, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., is the Market Square Summer Bash. According to the City of San Antonio's announcement, this bash promises live entertainment, food vendors, and artisanal goods. Not to mention, there's a hula hoop competition and activities for kids, with school supply giveaways planned from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., "while supplies last".
The fun doesn't stop there, though. Market Square will be abuzz each weekend with its regular programming that includes music, live artists, and food booths, all under the banner of community engagement and free-wheeling enjoyment. And, as summer fades to fall on August 30 through September 1, the Market Square Labor Day Celebration will keep the party going with a range of local bands and performers set to take the stage, as stated by the City of San Antonio.
Over at La Villita, the artisanal spirit is alive and well with Capistrano Soap Company's Sunday in the City classes every Sunday in August, where participants can create their own skincare products, soaps, candles, and even learn perfumery. These hour-long sessions at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. are first-come, first-served, with reservations "encouraged to ensure that there are ample supplies for participants." Meanwhile, the Dancing in the Dark – during the day! series, invites attendees to groove to the moves taught by Jeremy Zipagan, a pro dance instructor, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m, as per the City of San Antonio.
Lunch Break on Houston Street spices up lunch hours with food trucks and music happening on August 7 and 21 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in front of the Majestic Theatre. Savvy visitors planning to hit these events can manage the downtown hustle by sourcing transport and parking tips from the City of San Antonio's "Know Before You Go Downtown" website, or by opting for VIA Metropolitan Transit's Link ride-sharing service priced at just $1.30 a ride within its downtown service area zone, some relief in the bustle of city navigation.
For those driving in, the City of San Antonio's SAPark website offers an extensive parking map revealing a treasure trove of City-owned garages and lots. Two prime spots designed to lure you to leave your car are the St. Mary's Garage and the City Tower Garage, with St. Mary's Garage being "just steps from the River Walk, Houston Street and Travis Park," and the City Tower Sundays coming through with free parking on Sundays from 7 a.m. to midnight.
