The San Antonio International Airport is taking a significant stride forward with a $13.3 million boost from the Federal Aviation Administration. The grant, part of the FAA's Airport Infrastructure Grant (AIG) program under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), earmarks funds to support the new terminal's development currently in its fourth phase. Key construction activities benefiting from this injection include mass excavation, drilled piers, and assistance in the design for the terminal's mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, along with upgrades to the Baggage Handling Systems, as reported by the City of San Antonio's official website.
This federal grant is positioned to greatly enrich the ambitious Elevate/SAT program, which boasts a $2.5 billion tag for airport expansion and improvements. The funding is expected to not only uplift the passenger experience with enhanced connectivity but also to drive regional economic growth. With plans for 17 new gates and an expansion of over 850,000 square feet of terminal space, the project is anticipated to significantly elevate the travel experience at SAT. City Manager Erik Walsh, in a statement obtained by the City of San Antonio's news release, was upbeat about the prospects, saying "This federal investment is an important win for San Antonio," and going on to emphasize the project's vital role in meeting the demands of a growing city and ensuring benefits for future generations.
The terminal development's estimated impact extends beyond mere infrastructure; it's poised to generate approximately 16,000 jobs throughout its timeline. These positions will span a diverse set of fields, from engineering and skilled trades to customer service. Additionally, the initiative will likely to create partnerships with local businesses, providing a boon to contractors, subcontractors, and vendors within the community. The City of San Antonio's news release projects the terminal's development to eventually contribute an impressive $2.8 billion to the economy.
The city's aviation director, Jesus Saenz, acknowledged the FAA for their ongoing support in a statement on the City of San Antonio's news release. "We are grateful to the FAA for their continued partnership and commitment to improving our airport infrastructure," he conveyed, underlining the grant's role in inching towards the goal of a modern terminal that will serve as a significant economic catalyst for the region. With these pieces moving into place, the San Antonio International Airport is on course to redefine itself as a world-class conduit for travelers and commerce alike.
