As America celebrates Independence Day, San Antonio International Airport (SAT) has teamed up with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for a new initiative aimed at streamlining the travel process for U.S. military personnel and their families, with SAT leading the charge as the initiative kicks off at 10 airports nationwide. According to the City of San Antonio recent release, starting this summer, TSA PreCheck® will be complimentary for Gold Star family members, acknowledging their profound loss and service with waived enrollment fees thanks to partners CLEAR, IDEMIA, and Telos.
Under this initiative, military spouses will find a lighter burden on their wallets as they'll benefit from a $25 discount on TSA PreCheck enrollment, this move by TSA intended to support the particular challenges they face whether it's frequent travels for reunions or mandatory relocations due to new duty assignments. TSA Acting Administrator Ha Nguyen McNeill underscored the agency’s support in a statement obtained by the San Antonio International Airport, saying, “This Independence Day and beyond, TSA reaffirms its commitment to ease travel for the military community through its TSA PreCheck program by providing it free to Gold Star families, discounting it for military spouses and creating expedited lanes for service members," as stated by the City of San Antonio.
Moreover, to simplify the enrollment process for these benefits, TSA's notable collaboration with TSA PreCheck providers paves the way for mobile enrollment events strategically placed near major U.S. military installations; accessibility remains at the forefront of this program. In line with enhancing convenience, select airports with a heavy military presence are establishing dedicated screening lanes or ensuring that service members take precedence in TSA PreCheck lanes, hence minimally interrupting their transit, as per the City of San Antonio.
Service men and women, with the routine presentation of a Department of Defense (DOD) ID, already enjoy TSA PreCheck at no cost, and minors aged 13-17 can join a TSA PreCheck-eligible parent or guardian on the same reservation in an expedited lane; meanwhile, TSA Cares continues to offer veterans and wounded warriors specialized support throughout the security screening process. Detailed information about these new measures and TSA PreCheck benefits for our nation's protectors and their loved ones can be encountered by visiting tsa.gov/military and the TSA Cares portal at tsa.gov/travel/tsa-cares, as reported by the City of San Antonio.
