In a significant move for the City of San Diego, the City Council has given the green light to the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Annual Action Plan, which will see the administration of $43.5 million in federal grants to boost the quality of life for low- and moderate-income citizens. The City of San Diego reports that these funds are earmarked for expanding housing affordability, economic growth, and improving public services.
The plan details the allocation of over $12.1 million from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), earmarked for enhancing affordable housing access, bolstering small businesses, and investing in nonprofit facilities. Earning a cut of this funding, non-profits like Reality Changers and part of the competitive application process, Kitchens for Good, have been identified as key players in driving forward these community-improving initiatives.
Adding substance to this blueprint for a better city, the HOME Investment Partnerships Program contributes an impressive $30.3 million. Housing opportunities for families and the homeless are set to expand as the San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC) collaborates with the City to steer these funds into construction projects and offer direct financial assistance to homebuyers.
Moreover, the $990,775 Emergency Solutions Grant, identified by several organizations as a beacon of hope for those facing homelessness, should not be overlooked. This grant will provide shelter and facilitate rapid rehousing, ensuring that the most vulnerable are not left to wander without direction or a place to call their own.
Christina Bibler, the City’s Economic Development Director, praised the initiative, saying, "This federal funding plays a critical role in improving the lives of many, particularly those with low and moderate incomes." She went on to stress the comprehensive nature of the plan in her interview with the City of San Diego, mentioning job training, healthcare access, and reliable after-school care amongst the myriad of benefits these funds will secure for San Diegans.
