A San Diego man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for his role in distributing child pornography. Eduardo Alberto Zelaya Vides, 31, pleaded guilty and admitted to uploading and sharing explicit content of minors in an online chatroom designed for such heinous acts, as per the U.S. Department of Justice.
Zelaya Vides not only shared but aggressively pushed others to distribute similar content, further polluting the digital space with horrific images "post your sluts" and "post your young sluts" were some of the repulsive encouragements he offered, according to court documents. An undercover FBI operative infiltrated the group and witnessed the distressing exchanges. The U.S. Department of Justice reported that, in addition to prison time, Zelaya Vides is ordered to serve 15 years of supervised release, register as a sex offender, and pay $106,500 in restitution to the identified victims in the images.
The undercover Task Force officer involved in revealing Zelaya Vides' activities gave a chilling view into the world of online child exploitation, providing evidence that underpinned the sentencing. During the investigation, the FBI discovered and recovered a collection of over 2,000 digital files of exploited children from Zelaya Vides' possession, and as per the U.S. Attorney's announcement, he also disgustingly inquired in the group chat about the abuse of a family member.
This case is part of a wider Justice Department initiative, Project Safe Childhood, which is geared toward the elimination of child exploitation over the internet and has resulted in numerous arrests and prosecutions across the nation since its inception in February 2006. The task force consists of a network of local, state, and federal agencies committed to protecting the innocent and prosecuting the perpetrators.
