Earlier today, the San Diego Police Department led a raid, kicking down the doors of what was known as a recurrent blight on the community: an illegal gambling den located near Azalea Park. Official sources reported that this operation was a follow-up to a double shooting incident investigated in February of this year. This investigation first brought the den, nestled obtrusively into a residence on Fairmount Ave., into the daylight.
In a press release, the San Diego Police Department disclosed that those behind the enterprise had brazenly set their operation back into motion after their initial shutdown of the gambling location. When law enforcement returned, they found a dozen people inside the house, caught in the act of illegal gambling, surrounded by a mix of 12 gambling machines, firearms, ammunition, narcotics, and over a thousand dollars in cash - all seemingly at odds with the genteel San Diego neighborhood backdrop.
With assistance from the S.W.A.T. teams and the Vice Unit, combined efforts included a hand from the FBI’s Violent Crime Task Force. This conjoint strike was about more than just illegal betting; it was, in part, an effort to stem the tide of attendant vices typically drawn to such dens, including drugs, guns, and an upheaval of the neighborhood's late-night tranquility. As a result, six individuals were arrested, two were cited, and four more were released after questioning.
