San José Police Department officers are currently investigating what has become the 16th traffic-related fatality in the city this year, following a hit-and-run collision that occurred on May 30. The incident, initially resulting in non-life-threatening injuries, took a tragic turn when the victim, an adult male pedestrian who had been crossing in a marked crosswalk at the intersection of Sunset Avenue and Cinderella Lane, passed away due to complications from the injuries on Tuesday, according to the San José Police Department.

The preliminary investigation found that the pedestrian was struck by a 2019 white Chevy Silverado while legally crossing the road. The driver, who fled the scene, was apprehended on June 16. Following the pedestrian's unfortunate demise, authorities are expected to upgrade charges against the suspect to include vehicular manslaughter. 

The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for his involvement in the hit-and-run. San José police and the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner, who will release the the victim's name following standard protocols, urge anyone with information about the collision to come forward.
