In a disquieting incident in North Philadelphia, two three-month-old puppies were found in dire condition outside the ACCT Philly animal shelter. According to CBS News Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania SPCA reported the puppies being abandoned with severe, necrotic wounds and a maggot infestation. The find occurred roughly around 2 p.m. Thursday at the facility located on Hunting Park Avenue near Front Street.
Surveillance footage captured two individuals, who appear to be women, leaving the sick animals in a box outside the shelter. "The injuries that these puppies had didn't happen yesterday or the day before, it's something that's been going on for awhile," Gillian Kocher, the director of public relations for PSPCA, told CBS News Philadelphia. Staff members urgently called the PSPCA’s animal law enforcement team, and the puppies were swiftly transferred to PSPCA's hospital facilities, with one needing to be rushed to an emergency veterinary center.
The two puppies are believed to be shepherd mixes, though their exact breed and age are hard to pinpoint due to their condition. The Pennsylvania SPCA is now actively seeking information about the pair featured in the video, hoping to prevent further harm to any other animals that could be facing similar neglect. Audacy's KYW Newsradio quoted Kocher, stating, "Our animal law enforcement team is investigating this, and we were able to obtain a video from ACCT Philly of the individuals in question."
Public assistance is being requested in the case, and anyone with information is encouraged to reach out. Tips can be directed to the PSPCA cruelty hotline or emailed to their dedicated address, as mentioned in a report by PHL17. They stated that those with information should "contact the cruelty hotline at 866-601-7722 or [email protected]. Tips can be left anonymously." The effort is not just to rehabilitate these two puppies but to possibly save others by identifying and questioning the individuals responsible for such an act of neglect.
