This Saturday, the Shelby County Health Department will transform the Orange Mound Community Center into a one-stop shop for a multitude of health services and resources, all available to the public free of charge. The Community Care Fair, slated to run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2590 Park Avenue, aims to address a wide array of health needs, informing residents about various programs and aiding them with services right in their neighborhood.
In an event that couples practical support with community engagement, locals can expect to receive anything from free child safety seats (available while supplies last) to confidential HIV testing. A feature of the fair that is sure to draw attention is the provision of free back-to-school immunizations—a timely offering for families prepping for the approaching school year. Also on the roster are HIV preventive medications, opioid overdose prevention kits, and even fun extras like giveaways, according to the Shelby County Health Department's announcement.
Understanding the critical nature of health education, the organizers have also included tobacco prevention education among the available resources. The full suite of services is intended to deliver essential healthcare opportunities without the burden of financial concerns to residents of the historic Orange Mound and the neighboring communities.
"Shelby County Health Department is pleased to offer these free services to the people of Orange Mound and the surrounding community," Dr. Bruce Randolph, Shelby County Health Department Director/Health Officer, stated in the department's release. He also noted, "This event is the perfect time for families to get their children up-to-date on immunizations at no cost before the back-to-school rush." The fair promises not just health benefits but also communal joy, with free food and music set to round out the day.
