A string of parking lot robberies in Oakland County has led to the arrest of a brother and sister duo, as was reported by the authorities. The arrests occurred on Thursday night as part of a coordinated effort by a Special Operations Unit which included detectives from Waterford and White Lake Township, according to CBS News Detroit.
The suspects, a 21-year-old woman and her 20-year-old brother, are believed to be responsible for multiple purse snatchings in retail store parking lots across Commerce Township, Auburn Hills, and White Lake Township. The operation to apprehend them followed an incident on Wednesday when a 79-year-old woman became a victim of their crimes, sustaining minor injuries during a purse snatching on Town Center Boulevard, as per ClickOnDetroit. A vehicle pursuit ensued, but was quickly called off; however, surveillance soon led to their location and subsequent arrests.
The female suspect was taken into custody without incident, while her brother led detectives on a brief foot chase, passing through several backyards, before eventually being found hiding behind a garage. The effort to locate and arrest the siblings involved multiple agencies, including the Oakland County Sheriff's Office/Commerce Township substation, Auburn Hills Police, OCAT, SONIC, and the FBI, reported FOX 2 Detroit. Notably, the male suspect is currently on parole for similar crimes.
Both individuals are now facing charges of unarmed robbery and larceny in connection with the Commerce Township and Auburn Hills incidents. “While these victims may have sustained minor injuries, it could have been much worse. We have no way of knowing how far these suspects would have gone or to what extent the violence would have escalated had we not been able to halt this string of robberies," the Waterford Police Chief Scott Underwood articulated, per FOX 2 Detroit. As the investigation unfolds, detectives are preparing to present their findings for the White Lake Township incident for potential additional charges, reinforcing the commitment to bring those responsible to justice and restoring a sense of security in the community's public spaces.
