A tragic incident occurred in Simi Valley on Thursday, where an explosion, believed to be caused by fireworks, led to a house fire resulting in one fatality. According to KTLA, the fire began in the garage of the residence located on the 1600 block of Edmund Street shortly after 11:45 a.m. The Ventura County Fire Department responded to the scene, where they witnessed the home fully engulfed. The fire quickly spread to the attic and the main parts of the house but was extinguished within about an hour.
Witnesses in the neighborhood felt the impact of the explosion, with one local resident, Brandon Singer, recounting to KTLA that his wife thought it was an earthquake. The blast was so powerful, it sent panels of the garage door flying across the street. The Simi Valley Police Department confirmed that fireworks were to blame for the incident. Unfortunately, it has been reported by officials that one person was found dead. The identity of the victim has yet to be released publicly.
Additional reports from NBC Los Angeles stated that debris was scattered across the street in front of the badly damaged multi-story house, and the garage door itself was found on the opposite sidewalk. Firefighters discovered fireworks within the garage and a pickup truck parked outside the home.
Neighbors were left shaken by the scale of the explosion, with Andrea Cardona describing it as sounding like a "sonic boom," as she told CBS News Los Angeles. The man who perished in the fire was reportedly in his 40s and shared the home with his mother, who was not present at the time of the explosion. The incident serves as a grave reminder of the hazards associated with fireworks, with neighbor Cardona remarking, "If it was fireworks that caused this, then you can see the dangers of letting off any fireworks." The Simi Valley Police Department continues to advise residents to avoid the area while the investigation proceeds.
