While most kids eagerly await the ring of the last school bell, military-connected families in the Socorro Independent School District had an extra reason to celebrate the culmination of academic drudgery. The SISD's Military Summer Splash event, held on May 10, provided these families with an environment where fun met the sun in a communal clambake of relief and recreation. As detailed by Socorro ISD, the day was an opportunity for those bound by service to find respite from the rigor military life often demands.

One Ridge rising sophomore, Damien Apodaca, summed up the sentiment of many as he looked forward to taking the plunge, telling Socorro ISD, "I'm ready to jump in the pool, have some fun and get the summer started!" His excitement echoed through the Aquatics Center, an echo joined by the voices of approximately 600 attendees who gathered for this special occasion, offering a morning and an afternoon session to accommodate the schedules of its diverse families.

Military life, with its inherent transient nature, often strains the traditional concept of community. SISD's Military Summer Splash is a thread in the fabric they're weaving to counteract this, aiming to strengthen the bonds among military families. Highlighting the district’s attentiveness towards these unique needs, Dr. Carmen Olivas Graham, SISD director of Administrative Services, made it clear that the event represented a tangible thank you to families shouldering the weight of service. "These events are our way in the district of saying thank you for your service to all our military-connected families," Olivas Graham stated, as per Socorro ISD.

It's no secret that SISD's commitment to military families reverberates through its halls, with 46 out of 51 schools meriting the Purple Star campus designation from the Texas Education Agency, a nod to their steadfast support for military-connected students. This culture of inclusivity resonates with parents like Anke Farrar, whose son attended Benito Martinez Elementary School. "I appreciate every event that they put together and make us feel more included and show us what's available, too, in the district," Farrar said, as obtained by Socorro ISD.
