In a recent turn of investigations surrounding a fatal incident on Allen Park Road, Springfield Police have made a concerted breakthrough, leading to the apprehension of a man accused of murder—a crime marking the city with its violence—as reported by the Springfield Police Department news release.
On a silence-pierced February night, Springfield Police responded to a residence where they found two gunshot victims, the home now a grim tableau of violence and despair; 54-year-old Leslie Westbrook did not survive, while another adult male sustained injuries but lived to tell the tale—their linkage to suspect Robert Hatcher becoming clearer as Springfield Police Homicide Unit, led by Captain Trent Duda, dove deep into the unraveling mystery of that night.
Police efforts crystallized on July 2, when a collective arm of law enforcement, including Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit and Hampden County Sheriff’s Department, descended upon what they alleged to be Hatcher's abode, culminating in his arrest without incident; Hatcher faces a litany of charges that include murder, firearm assault to murder, and armed robbery among others, poised for a court appearance the subsequent Thursday.
Hatcher, 60, stands accused after investigators pieced together for months what transpired in the early hours of February 25, a puzzle culminating in multiple warrants his residence on the 200 block of Stapleton Road; investigators accuse him of discharge of a firearm within 500 feet of a building and carrying a firearm without license, not to mention the loaded arsenal that was allegedly carried without sanctity of law or concern for the constancy of life.
As the community wrestles with the weight of such a crime, eyes now turn to the upcoming arraignment in Springfield District Court, where the threads of justice will seek to weave through the facts, and the accused will stand to answer for the charges laid down by the warrant’s heavy hand.
