In recognition of World Chocolate Day, a sweet moment took a different form as the St. Charles County Police Department applauded one of their own. Instead of indulging in cocoa-rich treats, the department celebrated Detective Joe Strehl for his compassionate approach to law enforcement. The celebration was documented in a social media post, highlighting the mental health initiatives that Det. Strehl champions.
Det. Strehl, whose crisis intervention efforts have been integral since 2018, prefers to begin each call with a simple introduction, “Hi, I’m Joe.” It reflects a commitment to truly connect with those in crisis. According to a Facebook post by the St. Charles County Police Department, the CIT Officer and Crisis Negotiator has been instrumental in de-escalating tense situations, coordinating care, and offering a willing ear to listen. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) St. Louis has indeed chosen to spotlight Strehl's work in their inaugural Officer Spotlight initiative.
Beyond his duty hours, Strehl dedicates time to unwind through volleyball, immersing himself in books, and spending quality moments with his family and their dog. This balance, the post notes, is crucial to Det. Strehl's ability to maintain his mental health, essential for him to continue to effectively serve others.
The post and efforts like those taken by Det. Strehl signify a broader trend within law enforcement: an increasing emphasis on mental health and the importance of human connection in policing. His empathetic approach serves as an exemplar for officers nationwide, striving to equally address both the safety of the public and the psychological well-being of those involved. It’s initiatives like these that NAMI seeks to highlight in order to both recognize and inspire similar actions among law enforcement professionals.
