St. Louis city is stepping up its game for local youth sports with a little help from Nike and the Center for Healing and Justice Through Sport (CHJS). An announcement from the St. Louis Parks, Recreation, & Forestry Department detailed a special coach training day on June 21, focused on equipping coaches and recreation staffers with the skills to foster more inclusive, supportive, and nurturing environments for St. Louis's young athletes.
Coaches, leaders and volunteers from across the city's recreation centers and parks came together to participate in workshops and breakout sessions led by an array of experts. The collaboration aimed at creating a robust platform where thousands of kids involved in city sports programs can thrive. Matt Geschke, Senior Director, Social and Community Impact in the Americas for Nike, described the company's investment in future generations, pointing out, "Nike is powering the future of youth sport — with the vision of an active, inclusive world that inspires all youth to play and achieve their greatest potential." His statement confirms the global brand's commitment to the positive impact of play and movement for children, as per the City of St. Louis.
The city's pledge to cultivate youth development is clearly mirrored in this initiative, enhancing other city-wide efforts aimed at equal access to sports and recreation. Director of Parks, Recreation, & Forestry for the City of St. Louis, Greg Hayes, highlighted the influence coaches exert on young people, stating, "Coaches have a profound impact on the lives of young people. By investing in their growth and development, we are ensuring that every child in our programs has the opportunity to thrive under the guidance of a positive and well-prepared leader."
The CHJS's role in this endeavor underscores an effort to make sports an avenue for healing, resilience, and addressing systemic injustices. Their leadership during training day reflects an ongoing pursuit to ensure sports are more than a game, but a means for genuine change in the lives of youth. This latest coach training signals a significant advancement in the accessibility of quality coaching education, supporting a brighter future for the youth sports landscape in St. Louis.
