The Stockton Police Department Traffic Unit will conduct a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on Friday from 4:00 p.m. to midnight at an undisclosed location in Stockton. Officers will check for impaired drivers and valid driver’s licenses, as reported by the Stockton Police Department.

Car crashes involving impaired drivers continue to be a problem. The Stockton Police Department stated on social media that DUI checkpoints, especially when publicized, can reduce deaths and injuries by up to 20 percent. Checkpoint locations are chosen based on past DUI arrests and crashes.

According to the Stockton Police Department on their Facebook page, a DUI checkpoint will be set up where officers will check for signs of alcohol or drug impairment, which may cause short delays for drivers. Officers trained to identify drug-impaired driving will be present. The department said 30 percent of drivers in fatal crashes had drugs in their system, and 14 percent of active drivers were impaired by drugs, compared to 7.3 percent by alcohol. Driving under the influence can lead to jail, fines, and other costs over $10,000. The checkpoint is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety. People are advised to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 9-1-1.
