A high-speed police chase ended in tragedy when a suspect lost their life in a multi-vehicle crash in Livingston County on Tuesday night, authorities said. The Brighton Police Department initiated the pursuit around 10:45 p.m. after trying to stop a black Dodge Charger that was "operating recklessly" on West Grand River Avenue, according to WXYZ. The chase ensued and wound through multiple streets, with the suspect entering the northbound lanes of Old US-23 while trying to pass a southbound vehicle, leading to the fatal crash.
During the pursuit, the suspect sideswiped one vehicle, causing it to spin, before colliding with another vehicle, which resulted in the suspect's vehicle rolling over, as was detailed in a report by ClickOnDetroit. The suspect, who was the only occupant in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. After the terrible swirl of events, the driver of the southbound vehicle emerged without injuries, while the northbound vehicle's driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital as a precaution.
"This is a tragic incident," Brighton Police Chief Brent Pirochta said, pointing out the universal law enforcement sentiment to never witness a loss of life. This was underscored by Audacy. Further investigation into the crash is ongoing, with the Livingston County Accident Reconstruction Team suggesting that high speeds were a contributing factor, according to their preliminary findings. All individuals involved were reported to have been wearing their seatbelts at the time of the incident.
Authorities are also probing whether the deceased suspect was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The identity of the driver was not released pending investigation outcomes. As the inquiry unfolded, the debris from the crash covered over a quarter-mile stretch of South Old US Highway 23, which remained closed as of early Wednesday morning for cleanup efforts. The accident and subsequent road closure affected traffic, with the area between Spencer Road and Larchmore Drive being shut down while crews worked to clear the scene, a detail noted by WXYZ.
