Nearly nine months after a deadly shooting rocked a Southeast DC neighborhood, the Metropolitan Police Department has announced the capture of the suspect allegedly behind the homicide. On a fateful Monday morning, October 21, 2024, police were summoned to the intersection of 16th Street and Kentucky Avenue SE. Upon arrival, they discovered 23-year-old Jakele Allen, who was suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the immediate response from DC Fire and EMS, Allen's injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The search for Allen's killer led authorities on a manhunt that came to a close over 200 miles away. Kareem Thomas, a 36-year-old man from the Bronx, NY, became the primary suspect in the tragic incident. On July 24, 2025, Thomas found his run from the law ending in Mount Vernon, New York, thanks to the efforts of the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force. According to the Metropolitan Police Department, Thomas was wanted on a DC Superior Court arrest warrant for Second Degree Murder while Armed (Gun).
Details on the case remain scarce; however, the capture of Thomas has been lauded as a significant breakthrough. The Metropolitan Police Department has not publicly disclosed the motives behind the killing of Allen nor the circumstances that led them to identify Thomas as a suspect.
Now in custody, Thomas faces extradition to Washington, DC, where he will answer to the charges against him. The process could mark the beginning of the end for this chapter of tragedy that unfolded nearly a year prior, perhaps offering some solace to the family and friends of Jakele Allen. Details surrounding the extradition and future court proceedings are expected to be released by the authorities in due time.
