Last Saturday afternoon, in Iron Mountain, Michigan, a 19-year-old man was arrested for allegedly attempting to throw Molotov cocktails at the Dickinson County Republican Committee Headquarters. According to CBS News Detroit, the Iron Mountain Police Department responded to reports of a suspicious individual trying to ignite a rag protruding from a glass bottle before launching it at the building. No substantial damage was reported, as the homemade devices failed to light.
The incident occurred around 3:55 p.m., a time when people could have been potentially present within the office. The suspect, identified as Zayn Arcand, was arrested after the Iron Mountain Police reviewed security camera footage that captured the botched attack. As per TV6 News, Arcand's arraignment took place via Zoom yesterday, with a preliminary hearing to follow in August.
Building owners Ray and Barb Broullire expressed relief that the incident didn't escalate further. "We were very concerned," Ray Broullire commented to TV6 News, highlighting the fact that the building was occupied during the attempted attack. His wife, Barb, underscored the notion of accountability, wondering about the motive behind targeting their building specifically.
The Dickinson GOP committee, sharing office space with other businesses in the same building, made a statement alluding to the assumed political motivation behind the attack. "Authorities reported that the attack was due to displeasure with the current administration," the committee mentioned in a release obtained by MLive. The committee's chair, Angela Hall, said, "I think the point was to intimidate us into acting a certain way, which is a very serious thing," as noted by TV6 News.
Zayn Arcand is facing several charges including manufacturing and possession of an explosive and arson. During his court appearance, he gave only yes or no responses. As the investigation continues, local authorities and the GOP community remain alert, aware of the message the attack was meant to send.
