A confrontation earlier today resulted in the death of a man suspected of domestic violence and attempted arson in Detroit's east side. The sequence of events, which included a police pursuit and shootout, began after Warren Police responded to a reported disturbance on Prospect Avenue around 3 a.m., as detailed in a WXYZ report.
The suspect was accused of assaulting and attempting to strangle his girlfriend, before trying to set fire to the home, CBS Detroit reported. Officers arriving on the scene learned that the man had fled in a Chrysler sedan, believed to be armed, and a police chase ensued in the area of McNichols and Van Dyke.
During the chase, the man reportedly "fired several shots at officers from his vehicle," according to the Warren police report obtained by CBS Detroit. The standoff continued on the ground after the suspect abandoned his car at Castle Avenue and Kenney, and "continuing to fire shots at officers with officers returning fire."
Ultimately, police found the suspect with a gunshot wound to the head near Castle Avenue and Montlieu Street, not far from the suspect's mother's home, indicated in a ClickOnDetroit piece. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Detroit Fire Department, and at this time, it is unclear if the wound was self-inflicted or the result of police gunfire.
Authorities have confirmed that no officers were injured during the incident, and the Warren Police Detective Bureau and Detroit Police Department are continuing their investigations. No further threat to the community has been identified, and additional details regarding the altercation are expected to be released following the investigation.
