Detroit has seen a recent spate of vandalism, with two instances of shots being fired at prominent buildings downtown. Last Saturday morning, two individuals were arrested after a security guard witnessed shots being fired at the Guardian Building. According to CBS Detroit, the shots were detected around 5 a.m. at the historic 500 Griswold Street address. The Detroit Police, in the moments following the incident, located a vehicle that matched the suspect car's description from a previous shooting at another government building.
On the previous day, a similar event unfolded. Just before 5 a.m. on Friday, suspects in a gray sedan opened fire on the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, as reported by FOX 2 Detroit. The building, which houses Detroit City Government, Wayne County government offices, and courtrooms, suffered damage to several windows, struck by what was believed to be a pellet or BB gun. Matching the description of the vehicle, the suspects circled back to fire an additional shot, hitting a window on the north side.
No injuries were reported in either of these incidents. The early investigation details, shared by Audacy, indicate that the cleaning staff discovered the damage at Coleman A. Young Municipal Building about an hour after the shooting occurred. The incidents, separated by less than 24 hours and mere blocks, have triggered an ongoing evaluation by the Detroit Police to determine if the shootings are connected.
During the arrest outside the Guardian Building, officers recovered a BB gun and a handgun from the suspects' vehicle, though it is currently unknown which of the firearms was used in the shooting at the Guardian Building. As noted by CBS Detroit, it remains unclear whether the two men arrested have any connection with Friday's incident at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center. Authorities have yet to release the identities of the suspects in custody.
