The city of Tacoma faces a significant change with the upcoming closure of the long-standing Pacific Fred Meyer store. City Council Member Joe Bushnell expressed his disappointment over the closure, highlighting the store's role as a community staple and key employer. "I want to express my disappointment regarding the news of the upcoming closure of our local Pacific Fred Meyer store," Bushnell said in a statement reported by the City of Tacoma's official website. His sentiment reflects the impact this will have on residents who relied on the store for groceries, prescriptions, and jobs.
Encouraged by Kroger's commitment, Bushnell acknowledged that the company has pledged to offer the chance to transfer to new locations for all impacted employees. Following the announcement, made part of a company-wide initiative aimed at efficiency and business health by Kroger, Tacoma's workforce partners are ready to offer support and resources, affected by whom represents the store's dedicated employees and their families. This move signals a wider pattern of retail adjustments as companies adapt to evolving markets and consumer behaviors.
The closure, however, is also seen as an opportunity. Bushnell sees potential in the soon-to-be-vacated space, expressing optimism about attracting new tenants. "This is a prime commercial space in a thriving area of our city, and its vacancy opens a new chapter," he stated.
Tacoma is praised for its resilience and ability to adapt, a quality Bushnell is banking on to navigate this transition. "Though we are sad to see a long-standing business close its doors at this location, we are confident that by working together with community members and the property owner, we will bring a new and vibrant presence to this space," he told the City of Tacoma's website.
