A teenager has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred at a North Memphis convenience store last month, according to the Memphis Police Department (MPD). The incident, which resulted in the death of Jordan Spencer, took place on June 14 outside of a store located at the intersection of Chelsea Avenue and May Street. A report by Action News 5 outlined that the 17-year-old was detained following an attempt to apprehend individuals involved with a stolen Chevrolet Camaro tracked to the backyard of a residence.
Further details were provided by FOX13 Memphis, noting the shooting's victim, Spencer, was involved in modest enterprises, such as cutting grass, to earn a living. "He (Spencer) was doing all kinds of stuff to make him some money like cutting grass (and) helping his little partners with trucks and stuff like that," his cousin, Antonio Frazier, recounted to the news outlet. During the arrest, officers were surveilling a stolen vehicle when they apprehended several suspects, one of whom was the wanted teen.
The WREG report conveyed a witness statement mentioning a "heated" argument between Spencer and the suspect earlier on the fatal day. Officers initially responding to the scene discovered Spencer with gunshot wounds and later pronounced him deceased at Regional One Hospital. The subsequent investigation led to the identification of two vehicles, one being a grey Dodge Challenger, that were believed to be used by the suspects in the incident.
As the case develops, it has come to light that the 17-year-old suspect has not yet been bound over to an adult court per the information received from the district attorney's office, disclosed by FOX13 Memphis. The arrest unfolded on Monday, after law enforcement officials, including the Auto Theft Task Force and the Shelby County Sheriff’s BRAT, coordinated efforts to apprehend suspects associated with an attempted car theft involving the stolen Camaro.
