Tragedy struck just outside the city limits of Wake Forest early on a Saturday morning, claiming the life of a local teen and leaving two others injured. According to CBS 17, a single-car accident was reported around 5 a.m. along Chalk Road near Hidden Nook Lane. North Carolina State Highway Patrol identified the victim of the fatal crash as 17-year-old Jackson Ryan Brookhart, who was driving at the time of the incident.
Witnesses and authorities pieced together a harrowing scene where the black Kia, with two other passengers aboard, veered across the center line, departed from the road to the left, and collided with a ditch. The impact was so severe that the vehicle became airborne, struck a tree, and eventually overturned, coming to rest on the roadway as detailed by ABC 11. The front passenger, 18-year-old Reece Campbell of Greenville, and an unidentified 17-year-old male in the backseat were rushed to the hospital. The extent of their injuries was not immediately clear.
Speed is believed to be a contributing factor in this devastating event. Sergeant Marcus Bethea, quoted in the release from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, simply stated, "Speed is a contributing factor of the crash." As neighbors absorbed the news of the accident, Rudolph Subryan, a local resident, indicated to WRAL his lack of surprise given the known dangers of the roadway. "I knew exactly where because I know it's a dangerous curve in the road here," Subryan said, attesting to the hazardous conditions that may have played a role in this misfortune.
While the investigation into the specific dynamics of the crash continues, the Highway Patrol confirmed that all individuals in the car were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash. A family member of one of the injured teens informed WRAL that his condition was critical, bringing into focus the lasting impact such incidents have on friends and loved ones. The crash remains under investigation, and as of now, no further details have been disclosed.
