A street race gone awry claimed the life of a teenager in Chula Vista last night, as reported by the Chula Vista Police Department in a press release. At around 7:39 pm, two vehicles—a silver Toyota Corolla and a grey Hyundai Elantra—were allegedly engaged in a speed contest along the 1600 East Palomar Street when the situation escalated to tragedy. Failing to handle a turn, the Corolla veered off the road and collided head-on with a palm tree, ultimately severing the car in two.
Responding swiftly to calls concerning the incident, law enforcement and emergency services arrived at the scene. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, the unidentified 17-year-old driver of the Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene. While the second vehicle's involvement in the events that led to the collision is under scrutiny, the 28-year-old male driver remained at the scene and has been cooperating with authorities, with two small children in the back seat who were unscathed by luck.
The collision is currently under investigation by the Chula Vista Police Traffic Bureau. Witnesses have suggested that the vehicles were involved in a speed-oriented altercation before the crash. However, the official cause remains undetermined, and it is currently believed that neither drugs nor alcohol played a role. As the community searches for answers, anyone with information regarding the crash has been urged to contact the Traffic Bureau at 619-476-2428.
Traffic along East Palomar Street was reportedly disrupted as the investigation unfolded.
