Tempe, Arizona, has garnered a new accolade that highlights its contribution to global understanding and educational innovation. The city's Tempe Sister Cities organization was recently honored with the 2025 Innovation in Youth and Education Award by Sister Cities International, a nod to its Youth Cultural Exchange program. This recognition is awarded to cities with populations between 100,001 and 300,000 and is an affirmation of Tempe's commitment to international friendship and cultural diplomacy.
The award shines a light on the efforts to not only connect but to profoundly involve local high school students in global exchanges. Tempe Sister Cities has managed to seamlessly send students to inculcate themselves with families abroad, while reciprocally welcoming peers into their own community. According to an announcement, these programs have crafted over 800 cultural ambassadors who carry with them the bonds of lifelong international relationships.
This isn't the first occasion Tempe Sister Cities has been recognized; the organization has an impressive history with seven Outstanding Sister City Program awards under its belt. However, this is the inaugural instance that it has been honored with the Innovation Award, setting a precedent for its forward-thinking approach to youth and education in the sphere of sister cities.
The Youth Cultural Exchange is cited as the heartbeat of the sister cities initiative. But the organization's impact stretches further, with humanitarian efforts such as the construction of wells and schools in Timbuktu and the distribution of medical aid to those in need. These ventures are supported by community fundraisers like the Tempe Oktoberfest and the operations of the Hackett House, making certain Tempe's contributions to global citizenship continue to thrive.
