In the wake of catastrophic flooding across Texas, Attorney General Ken Paxton has issued a warning to residents about potential scams. In a statement obtained by the Office of the Attorney General, Paxton expressed his determination to confront this issue, saying, "There are no words for how wrong it is that morally bankrupt people are trying to take advantage of Texans by using this tragedy to scam them."

Paxton stated that scammers will be held fully accountable under the law and encouraged the community to support those affected during this crisis. Texas residents are urged to remain cautious, especially when asked for money or help with reconstruction efforts. In the aftermath of such disasters, there is an increased risk of encountering fraudulent contractors who accept payment but do not complete the promised work.

Scams frequently occur following natural disasters, targeting individuals during times of heightened vulnerability. Texans are advised to be cautious of contractors from outside the area, avoid making quick decisions on contracts, verify references, and consult the Better Business Bureau to confirm legitimacy. Paxton's office also noted that state law prohibits price gouging on essential goods and services during disaster declarations.

Governor Greg Abbott's disaster declaration covers 21 counties, including Bandera, Bexar, and Travis, expanding legal protections against price gouging. Individuals who experience scams or exploitative pricing in the affected areas are encouraged to report incidents to the Attorney General’s office. Complaints can be submitted by calling the toll-free number 1-800-621-0508 or by using the online form available on the Attorney General’s website.
