The state of Louisiana has appointed a new Assistant Secretary for the Office of Wildlife. Thomas "Tommy" Tuma, formerly with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), has been selected for the position, according to current Secretary Tyler Bosworth. With 27 years of experience, Tuma brings extensive knowledge in wildlife and forest management to the role.

According to a press release, Bosworth said, "I am excited to have Mr. Tuma’s vast experience at LDWF to serve as Assistant Secretary of Wildlife." Tommy Tuma has been recognized for his "deep operational expertise, strong intergovernmental relationships, and a lifelong commitment to responsible land stewardship, efficient public service, and the expansion of quality outdoor recreation in Louisiana."

A native of Libuse, Louisiana, Tommy Tuma graduated from Louisiana Tech University in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science in Forestry. Shortly after, he began his career at LDWF and has progressed through roles including Forestry Biologist, Biologist Supervisor, Program Manager, Director, and most recently, Administrator of the Office of Wildlife. His work spans over 1.6 million acres, covering Wildlife Management Areas, private lands, and numerous conservation and restoration projects.

During his time at LDWF, he has worked in bottomland hardwood management and forest stewardship, integrating wildlife habitat conservation into forestry operations. As he joins the Executive Team under Secretary Bosworth, his role will involve overseeing the agency’s wildlife activities.
