A tragic incident struck Oakland County yesterday afternoon when a pleasure outing turned into a dire emergency as a boat explosion left three individuals severely injured. The incident, which occurred on Pontiac Lake, involved a 45-year-old father from Waterford Township, his 16-year-old son, and a family friend also aged 16, as reported by ClickOnDetroit. Officials said the explosion happened around 1:20 p.m. at a public boat launch near M-59 and Williams Lake Road as they attempted to start their 17-foot Chris-Craft boat.
En route to the hospital, one of the teens was found to have burns across 50% of his body and is listed in critical condition. Having responded to the call, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team, in conjunction with the Waterford Township Fire Department, discovered that the fire from the explosion had already extinguished itself by the time they arrived. Both the father and son were hospitalized with severe burns but are reportedly stable, according to a FOX 2 Detroit article.
The scene was secured by local authorities, who are now delving into what may have caused the boat to explode upon ignition. While the investigation proceeds, details remain scarce, but the repercussions of the event were immediate and severe, as conveyed by the various reports from the scene. Quoting the information gleaned from an exclusive interview, WXYZ stated, "All three people have been hospitalized after the explosion."
