On a quiet Wednesday this July, an undercover operation set forth by Somerset Police, alongside Swansea Police and the Massachusetts State Police High-Risk Victims Unit, brought to light a disturbing pursuit: adults seeking illegal sexual encounters with minors. The Somerset Police Department disclosed this via a social media announcement, detailing their joint operation, which took place at an undisclosed location in Somerset and subsequently led to the apprehension of three individuals on July 9. The suspects were believed to have come to the location with the intent to engage in commercial sexual activity with minors.
The suspects, apprehended as they aimed to fully and criminally realize their unlawful objectives, currently face serious charges. Among them Somerset Police Department named Fabio A. Gomes, 38, John J. Kelley, 78, and Gilbert Travassos, 54. The charges delineate the gravity of their purported crimes: "Pay for Sexual Conduct with a Child Under 18," "Enticing a Child Under 16," and "Attempt to Commit a Crime."
According to the Somerset Police Department, Chief William Tedford has openly expressed his gratitude for the inter-agency collaboration that enabled this operation to unfold successfully. "The most effective way to protect our vulnerable populations is through a collaborative, multi-agency approach with our local and state partners," Tedford's statement reflected their joint effort. This operation underlines the ongoing vigilance and proactive measures taken by law enforcement to prevent the sexual exploitation of minors and to apprehend those who try to harm them.
