Three Texas men are behind bars following a "bank-jugging" style burglary in Orange County, marking another chapter in a worrying nationwide trend of crime. The trio, identified as Maurice James, 24, Samuel Marcus Polite, 20, and Ja Vion Marcell La Shang Mathews, 22, were apprehended after a carefully executed police operation observed them engaging in what has become known as "bank-jugging." This particular crime spree involves perpetrators staking out bank customers, following those who withdraw cash, and then breaking into their vehicles to snatch the freshly withdrawn dollars.
Yesterday's bust stemmed from two vehicle burglaries that occurred in Irvine on July 2, where unsuspecting customers were targeted after exiting banks. The investigation was propelled by the Real Time Crime Center's identification of a suspect vehicle, a black Ford Expedition, made more elusive by its display of a stolen license plate. This pattern of crime came to a head in Seal Beach when the suspects, after several bank stakeouts, burglarized a car and made off with a banker's bag, according to a statement by the City of Irvine.
Upon their arrest shortly after the Seal Beach incident, detectives dug into the Ford Expedition and unearthed a trove of incriminating items: the stolen banker's bag, a fake license plate, burglary tools, a ski mask, and cash, suggesting a certain degree of premeditation and organization in their criminal endeavors. The discoveries have led officials to probe the connection between these men and the earlier Irvine cases.
The three suspects were booked at Orange County Jail, facing a smorgasbord of charges including conspiracy, vehicle burglary, felony vandalism, possession of burglary tools, and possession of stolen property. Meanwhile, Irvine continues to uphold its reputation; a city that prides itself on being one of the nation's safest, with a strong community, environmental stewardship, and a vibrant business environment.
Law enforcement officials are taking this opportunity to caution bank customers on the potential dangers of conspicuous cash withdrawals. A safe drop-off destination is recommended immediately following a withdrawal to prevent becoming a target.
