In a devastating incident at Mor Linn Farm in Walpole, Massachusetts, eight horses perished when a fire engulfed their barn. The blaze, which occurred overnight, decimated the 150-year-old structure. The aerial footage captured by Boston 25 News displayed fierce flames shooting through the barn roof, providing a jarring visual of the fire's intensity.
The farm owner was able to lead ten horses to safety from the first floor of the barn. The second floor, however, was quickly filled with smoke and flames, preventing any rescue attempts for the animals trapped there. “They tried as hard as they could to get them out of the barn, but it happened so fast, and unfortunately the horses’ instincts are to stay in their stalls because that’s where they feel the safest,” said June Gillis-Ahern, a friend of the farm’s owners, in an interview with WCVB.
As the community comes to terms with the tragedy, nearby horse farms have stepped in to help board the surviving horses, providing shelter and support in the wake of the disaster. The Walpole Police Department had earlier issued a public warning, urging citizens to steer clear of the area while emergency responders tackled the fire.
Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire. According to WCVB, severe storms were reported in the area the night of the incident, and lightning strikes forced firefighters to remove a ladder from their engine during the response.
One of the horses that died in the fire belonged to the farm owner's daughter. The barn, which was over 150 years old, was completely destroyed in the blaze, marking the loss of a longstanding structure in the Walpole community.
