Two boaters found themselves in peril on the Battle Creek River yesterday afternoon after their vessel went over a dam and capsized. The incident occurred near Wagner Drive and Emmett Street, prompting a swift response from the Battle Creek Fire Department at approximately 1:21 p.m., confirming details from multiple sources. WOODTV reported that while one boater managed to reach the shore independently, the other remained trapped in the water beside the overturned boat.
Upon their arrival, fire department personnel deployed swift water rescue gear to retrieve the second boater, still struggling alongside the flipped vessel. Each boater was examined by medical teams immediately afterwards and were both released at the scene without the need for hospitalization, as noted by WZZM13. The scene also saw assistance from the Battle Creek Police Department, Calhoun County Marine Patrol, and LifeCare Ambulance.
In a joint effort, emergency crews managed to secure and remove the capsized boat from the river, ensuring no further risks were posed to river navigators. Notably, the fire department units Car 3, Engine 1, Engine 3, and Engine 5 were all present to address the predicament, demonstrating a coordinated emergency service response to the water rescue.
