Wailuku was the site of an investigation on Wednesday afternoon after a passerby found an object resembling a wartime remnant. A post by the Maui Police Department stated that officers requested assistance from the Hawaii Inter-Island Bomb Squad after a report of a “bomb shell” near the Central Maui Landfill off Pulehu Road. The individual who reported the item had picked it up, believing it to be an intact military ordnance.

The Bomb Squad determined that the suspicious object had no fusing system or initiators, making it incapable of detonation. The Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team used X-ray imaging to further analyze the item. It was identified as a 3.5-inch MK1&2 Armor Piercing Round filled with solid steel, posing no risk in its current state, as reported by the Maui Police Department.

Maui Police temporarily closed Pulehu Road for about an hour while Hawaii Inter-Island Bomb Squad and Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal assessed a piece of ordnance, according to the Maui Police Department on their Facebook page. No injuries were reported. The department secured the item until the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal can arrange proper disposal and reminded the public to "avoid handling any suspected ordnance and to contact authorities immediately upon discovery."
