In a move aimed at enhancing customer service and safety, the Union County Government Center, situated at a bustling 500 N. Main Street in downtown Monroe, is set for a significant makeover. According to an announcement by the county, the main entryway and its adjacent first-floor corridor are scheduled for an upgrade. Starting July 21, the usual public ingress from Main Street Plaza will be sealed off, redirecting foot traffic for approximately six months.
During the revamp, a temporary entrance will be functional on the ground floor, accessed from the rear end of the building on N. Church St. In a statement obtained by the Union County Government, the security desk will be shifted to accommodate this change, ensuring that "all current security protocols will remain in place" to assist visitors. Despite the detour, the county services are slated to run uninterrupted, with the county urging residents to utilize online services for a myriad of needs ranging from paying bills to reviewing agendas for board meetings.
Integration of signs, both outside and inside the Government Center, is on the cards, guiding visitors around the construction work to the temporary gateway. A comprehensive map detailing the shuttered main entrance, the interim access, and public parking—including spaces for individuals with disabilities—was shared by the county officials. Additional accessible parking has been made available throughout downtown Monroe, acknowledging the needs of all citizens.
Once completed in January 2026, visitors can expect a more secure and contemporary point of entry. The county extends its thanks in advance, appreciating public patience during the overhaul. These renovations are an investment in a more functional and welcoming environment for both employees and patrons of the Government Center.
