The University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music is gearing up to dance into a new era with the appointment of Hee Ra Yoo as its new Assistant Professor of Dance. The announcement, made by CCM Dean Pete Jutras, was warmly received by the dance community both near and far. With her tenure set to commence on August 15, 2025, Yoo brings to the table an international palette of experiences that spans the globe from South Korea to Australia, and from New York City's bustling stages to the collegiate theatre. UC heralded her as an "accomplished performer, educator, choreographer and researcher."
Yoo's journey in the world of dance is as varied as the forms she has mastered. She is not only the founder of Yoo and Dancers, a contemporary dance company based in New York, but her resume also includes stints with the Korean National Ballet and the Canberra Dance Theatre. Since completing her MFA at NYU Tisch School of the Arts, Yoo has gone on to teach at several prestigious institutions, including Tulane University and the Joffrey Ballet School. It appears CCM is set to benefit from her years of teaching and choreography, along with her knack to integrate unique somatic techniques into the classroom seamlessly.
The intensive experience Yoo has with dance pedagogy is particularly noteworthy. Her innovative approach includes the use of TheraBand in classes to aid dancers in understanding their body mechanics and balance. This reflects a broader aim in her research, which is to "improve dance pedagogy for all levels of students" according to the details shared by UC News. Her dedication to fostering a deeper kinesthetic awareness among dancers is an asset likely to resonate throughout CCM's Dance Department.
In celebrating this new appointment, Dean Jutras was quick to extend his gratitude towards the committee responsible for bringing Yoo on board. The decision was not taken lightly, but rather came as the result of considered deliberation by a team consisting of professionals like Shauna Steele and Aik Khai Pung. Yoo's slot in the fabric of CCM's faculty is more than just a new job placement; it is the cultivation of an environment where the arts are given room to flourish truly, to weave together the physical and the emotional into a tapestry of expression that often can only find its voice through the body's movement. With CCM's continued commitment to excellence, it is eager to see how Hee Ra Yoo's contributions will push the boundaries and expand the horizons of its dance program.
