In the Fells Point neighborhood of Baltimore, residents and commuters faced an intense scenario as a powerful storm brought not only severe flooding but also the unusual sight of a car ablaze amidst the rising waters. According to cell phone footage captured by witness Bradley Brown and shared by FOX Baltimore, the incident occurred on Tuesday evening at the intersection of Aliceanna and Caroline streets, as several vehicles were left stranded by floodwaters.
Responding to the emergency, firefighters arrived swiftly to extinguish the fire and assisted at least two drivers from the flood, which is notorious for its propensity to flood. "I wish the city had better flooding stuff in place so this wouldn't happen," Brown expressed his concern, as per FOX Baltimore. During a weekly press availability, Baltimore City Mayor Brandon Scott highlighted a broader issue, stating, "This is not about drainage, this is about climate change and rising water." He emphasized the need to address climate change as the escalator of these recurring severe weather incidents.
The aftermath of the storm left a grim reminder of its power, as WMAR-2 News reported that mud, trash, and debris were strewn along the flooded streets. Residents like Lindsay O'Meara noticed the acceleration in flooding incidents, saying, "Didn't know that cars could catch on fire underwater but, we've noticed the past like three really heavy rains that we've had that this whole area has flooded."
Local businesses and residents are feeling the brunt of the flood's impact, with establishments like Harbor Tandoor restaurant witnessing a 50% drop in reservations due to the inaccessible flood zone.
No one was hurt in this incident, but the fire and flood show how unpredictable and severe the weather is becoming.
