The Wake County Animal Center is getting creative with their approach to find homes for the numerous pets in their care, by launching the Clear the Shelter Extravaganza. In an initiative detailed by the Wake County, from July 19 to Aug. 31, the center will not only waive adoption fees for all pets, but will also host themed weeks with costumes, treats, music, and other surprises.
Amidst recent struggles with overcrowding, the center disclosed that it received an overwhelming influx of 113 new animals in just one week, tipping the scales of their capacity. Susan Evans, chair of the Wake County Board of Commissioners, conveyed in a statement obtained by the Wake County that, “Clear the Shelter started as a nationwide effort to help shelters reduce overcrowding and find loving homes for pets.” She emphasized the aim is to transform adoption into a delightful encounter for both humans and animals.
With the shelter taking responsibility for 236 dogs, 13 puppies, 62 cats, 229 kittens, three rabbits, and six guinea pigs, space has become a pressing issue. Normally, adoption fees at the center range from $15 for senior cats to $95 for dogs, but in a bid to encourage adoptions and manage the current high volume of residents, all fees will be waived for the duration of the event. It's crucial to note that while adoption costs are eliminated, Wake County's standard adoption procedures will stay intact—ensuring that all pets are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before they find their new homes.
Jennifer Federico, director of Wake County Animal Center, told the Wake County that the shelter is almost always near full capacity, but right now they're down to a few empty kennels. She stated, “It’s the perfect opportunity to find your new companion and help us clear the shelter, one tail wag at a time.”
Those interested in adopting can either peruse the adoption gallery online or visit the shelter in person to engage with potential new family members. The Wake County Animal Center is located at 820 Beacon Lake Drive, Raleigh, and is open for adoptions daily from noon to 6 p.m., seven days a week.
