Anglers on the Yampa River received an update from Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) regarding the recent fishing closures enforced due to environmental concerns. A section of the Yampa River near Stagecoach Dam has now reopened to fishing after mandatory restrictions were lifted on Thursday, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife. This 0.6-mile stretch was initially closed on May 19 to protect fish populations from low-flow conditions that contribute to stress and increased mortality.

The lifting of the closure, Colorado Parks and Wildlife noted, came as a result of increased flows from Stagecoach Reservoir and in response to the improving conditions, Stagecoach State Park Manager Craig Preston expressed gratitude for the patience of anglers saying, "While these closures are not ideal, they were put into place to protect the resource by giving the fish a bit of a reprieve as they are prone to increased stressors related to these extreme low-flow conditions." Despite the reopened stretch downstream of the dam, CPW has implemented a voluntary fishing closure on a different stretch of the Yampa River due to water temperatures exceeding 71°F for multiple consecutive days near Steamboat Springs.

This voluntary closure affects the river from the Chuck Lewis State Wildlife Area to the western edge of Steamboat Springs; it will remain effective until conditions improve. The closure began on July 16. CPW emphasizes the seriousness of these restrictions, with Northwest Region Senior Aquatic Biologist Ben Felt explaining that "Closures, voluntary or mandatory, are implemented once river conditions meet a threshold where fish health is impacted," as per Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
