
The Yuba County community is mourning following a tragic accident on the Feather River near the Star Bend boat ramp this past Independence Day. A report of a possible drowning was received by the Yuba County Sheriff's Office around 5:30 p.m. on Friday, according to a social media post from Yuba County Sheriff's Office. The victim, a 16-year-old male from Marysville, was with a group that had ventured to a remote beach. The teen struggled after falling into a deep channel and eventually submerged.
Multiple agencies came together to search for the teen, including the Sheriff's Boat Unit and Technical Rescue Team, Linda Fire Department, Yuba City Fire Department, Sutter County Sheriff's Office, Marysville Fire Department, and the Yuba Sutter Aero Squadron, which provided aerial search support. The search operations were suspended once darkness set in, and, the recovery efforts resumed the following day. On the afternoon of July 5, at about 3:30 p.m., rescue teams located the juvenile's body in roughly 17 feet of water. The recovery was conducted by the Sheriff's Office Technical Rescue Team, the identity of the young individual is being held until the family is notified.
In light of the incident, the Yuba County Sheriff's Department has issued a reminder of the dangers posed by river channels, noting their unpredictability, strong undercurrents, and the risk posed by colder temperatures. The community extends its condolences as friends and relatives grapple with the sudden loss, with the department expressing "our deep-felt sympathy and prayers go out to the family and friends of the victim."
This event has shaken the small community of Yuba County, reminding residents and visitors alike of the need for vigilance when enjoying natural water bodies. As summer progresses, authorities urge the public to exercise caution and to respect the power of nature’s waterways.
