A tragic incident unfolded at Lake Pueblo State Park earlier this week when an 18-year-old male lost his life in a suspected drowning. Colorado Parks and Wildlife Officers were called to the scene just before noon on Tuesday after reports came in of a man struggling in the water. Despite the rapid response of park staff and the deployment of CPW boat crews wielding sonar equipment shortly after the emergency call, the young victim could not be saved.
According to eyewitnesses, without a life jacket on, the young man went underwater about 65 yards from shore, submerged in 23 feet of water near the park's east end, close to the dam. With water temperatures recorded in the mid-70s, he quickly disappeared from view. In the effort to reach the victim, CPR was performed by a diver from the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office aboard a CPW boat. They raced towards the emergency medical technicians awaiting on the shore at N-1 Cove Beach, as obtained by Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
The fast-acting CPW team, along with the diver, managed to recover the victim within an hour after the initial 911 alert was made. Despite their efforts, medics on the scene declared the victim deceased at approximately 1 p.m. The identity of the young man and the precise cause of death will be determined by the coroner's office following a thorough investigation.
Park Manager Joe Stadterman expressed his condolences, "CPW offers condolences to the family and friends of the victim, and everyone involved in the incident," he said, as per Colorado Parks and Wildlife, highlighting the deep loss felt by the community and the first responders involved in the rescue attempt. The incident serves as a grave reminder of the importance of safety measures when partaking in water activities, especially wearing a life jacket. A life jacket supports the body, keeping it afloat and the head above water, which can be life-saving in unexpected situations where a swimmer stops swimming or becomes unconscious. These simple yet critical precautions can prevent such heartbreaking outcomes.
