In a decisive strike against the violent criminal organization known as Tren de Aragua (TdA), the District of Colorado's U.S. Attorney’s Office has unveiled two federal indictments charging 30 individuals with a gamut of serious offenses. The charges, as detailed by the U.S. Department of Justice, include drug trafficking, murder-for-hire, and firearms crimes.

Following a nine-month investigation focusing on an apartment complex in Denver, a federal grand jury indicted 28 people with involvement in firearms trafficking, drug-related violence, and more. Contained within the indictment, five are facing charges specifically for conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire. In the operation, ATF officers, having targeted the Denver area that was afflicted by an increase in violent crime and drugs, recovered a cache of 69 firearms, some of which were automatic machine guns linked to various local crimes.

The indictments don't stop there. Two additional individuals, Luis Fernando Uribe-Torrealba and Luis Henriquez-Charaima, were charged separately with a mix of six counts relating to firearms and controlled substance trafficking, as well as carjacking and conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire. Arrested in Colombia on July 30 and now awaiting extradition proceedings, their seizure was a result of international law enforcement collaboration, highlighting the global reach of these criminal networks.

Of the 28 U.S.-based defendants, 24 are now in federal custody. The reach of TdA's influence, stretching from the tumult of their native Venezuela to the quiet streets of Colorado, remains a critical focus for law enforcement. Agencies that include the ATF, DEA, HSI, and ICE played a crucial part in this operation, bringing together a wide spectrum of resources. People marred by Tren de Aragua's violent ripples were further supported by the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, the Aurora Police Department, and the Denver Police Department.

The two-case salvo forms part of Operation Take Back America, an ambitious Justice Department initiative aimed at stemming the tide of illegal immigration and disbanding cartels and transnational crime syndicates like TdA, now officially branded as a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the U.S. government. With the culmination of efforts from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhood, the Justice Department hopes to restore safety to communities rocked by these organizations' unlawful activities.
