
Tragedy struck in Geauga County as a home on Erwin Drive in Burton became a scene of loss. In a statement obtained by Cleveland 19, the Burton Volunteer Fire Department reported that a 68-year-old woman died in a house fire that occurred early yesterday morning. Firefighters arrived just before 4 a.m., where they encountered a 69-year-old man who had managed to escape, informing them the woman was still inside.
With an estimated $160,000 in damage, the blaze took more than just a physical toll. The Burton Volunteer Fire Department details that the man is in stable condition, having escaped the wrath of the fire that claimed his peer's life. He told dispatch, according to WKYC, that the woman was trapped inside their home as firefighters rushed to respond to the emergency.
Initial efforts to save the woman were complicated by severe clutter blocking access to her. "Attempts to rescue the woman were hindered because a door was blocked and by 'extreme clutter,'" detailed a news release from the fire department, reported by Cleveland.com. Firefighters were ultimately able to reach the woman by extracting her through a bedroom window.
Rescue personnel provided immediate aid on the scene, quickly transporting both individuals to the hospital. Providing aid on the scene quickly, the 68-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries while the man remained stable. The Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office is at the forefront, investigating the cause of the conflagration that brought an end to a life, and rescue teams were supported by a cadre of local fire departments and agencies.
The Burton Fire Department was joined by Middlefield, Troy, Newbury, Munson, Russell, Hambden, Chardon, Auburn, Parkman, Montville, and Mesopotamia fire departments in the efforts to control and eventually extinguish the fire, with Community Care Ambulance and the American Red Cross also responding to the crisis.
