A 72-year-old Bratenahl man, identified as Albert Lentz, tragically died after being found in Lake Erie near Edgewater Beach yesterday evening, as reported by various local sources. According to Cleveland19, the incident drew a response from Cleveland Metroparks Police, firefighters, EMS, and the U.S. Coast Guard around 5:30 p.m. Surfers first discovered Lentz in the water before authorities were alerted.
The office of the Cuyahoga County medical examiner confirmed the victim's identity, as noted by cleveland.com. While initial attempts were made to revive Lentz, he succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital. The cause of death, pending an autopsy that was scheduled for Today, remains to be confirmed.
In a related detail, the Cuyahoga County medical examiner's office also mentioned a search for a person named Williams, which was temporarily halted due to dangerous water conditions. It was later noted that Williams' body was recovered at the Edgewater Public Boat Ramp on Whiskey Island. It is unclear at this time if Lentz and Williams' incidents are related or if there was confusion surrounding the names involved.
Cleveland Metroparks' Director of Communications Jacqueline Gerling was quoted by News 5 Cleveland, confirming that a 72-year-old man was indeed pulled from the lake by surfers who found him unresponsive. This individual, later identified as Lentz, was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, lending to a somber reminder of the lake's unpredictable nature and the swift response required by emergency personnel in such critical moments.
