Last Thursday night, Citizens Bank Park was buzzing with a different kind of energy as the cast of "Abbott Elementary" brought a piece of Hollywood to Philly baseball. The ABC sitcom filmed an episode during a live Philadelphia Phillies game, an event that had both fans and stars excited. According to 6abc, the stars, from Quinta Brunson to Sheryl Lee Ralph, were seated among the crowd, blending in, not only as actors but as fans at an "epic game."
Clearly aiming to bring a fresh angle to the series, Quinta Brunson explained how significant this was for the sitcom, "It's going to be cool," she told 6abc. "It's also going to be a big triumph for our show to pull off. This isn't easy to do." Meanwhile, Tyler James Williams put things into perspective: "Very rarely does in get done in TV. To be at a game on Thursday and then see it a few weeks later on TV? Amazing," he said. The shoot was a part of the show's fifth season, set to premiere on October 1.
The partnership between "Abbott Elementary" and the Philadelphia Phillies was initiated by MLB Studios, revealing how such an unconventional concept came together. Soap Central reported that MLB Studios reached out to Warner Bros. and the Phillies to start the process. The collaboration aimed at creating an authentic experience, shooting on-location at a Phillies game.
It's not the show's first dance with Philadelphia sports – past seasons featured Philly sports icons like Gritty and some Eagles players. Yet filming at a live Phillies game is certainly raising the bar. Fans at the game and social media users got a heads-up, thanks to a post from Phillie Phanatic's Instagram account, featuring the cast with the green mascot. "As big fans of the series, MLB Studios initiated outreach to Warner Brothers and subsequently the Phillies to get the shooting process started," MLB Studios disclosed in a statement obtained by Deadline. By all accounts from participants and attendees, the unconventional filming was a grand slam – minus the literal baseball – bringing a slice of beloved local culture to a wider audience.
While the entire cast appeared to relish the experience, for some members, such an event was like a home run with a dash of wish fulfilment. "I'm kind of hoping we get one, one 'You suck,'" laughed Chris Perfetti, who plays "Jacob Hill." in the series, according to 6abc. Based on reactions from the stands, though, that was one pitch he didn't have to swing at.
