After enduring four years of construction, the people of Akron are seeing light at the end of the tunnel as the Akron Beltway Project approaches completion. This extensive initiative, spearheaded by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and locally celebrated by Akron Mayor Shammas Malik and ODOT District 4 Deputy Director Gery Noirot, promises an overhaul of vital infrastructure spanning Interstate 77, I-76, State Route 8, and multiple bridges. The project, costing $161 million, aimed to modernize and enhance traffic flow in one of the busiest regions of northeast Ohio.

Key improvements include new lanes and pavement on I-77, refreshed surfaces on I-76, and an additional southbound lane on SR 8. This massive undertaking not only reconstructed 45 lane miles of pavement but also facilitated repairs on over 40 bridges, as detailed in a statement obtained by the official Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) announcement. "We appreciate their patience as we made these significant improvements. The result will be a huge benefit to those traveling to and through the Akron area," Noirot said in reflection of the community's resilience throughout the construction.

A noteworthy element of the project is the reconfiguration at the Central Interchange, which includes re-aligned and reconstructed ramps from I-76 westbound to I-77 southbound, along with I-76 eastbound to SR 8. This enhancement is expected to ease congestion and bolster safety by facilitating a smoother traffic flow. "This project provides Akron with an enhanced gateway as well as a freeway system that is a safer and more efficient mover of traffic," said Noirot via the ODOT official website, highlighting the comprehensive nature of the project.

The completion date is targeted for November, with minor elements such as bridge painting and other small miscellaneous tasks remaining. The project, initiated in the summer of 2021 by the joint venture of Ruhlin and Shelly & Sands, represents a collaborative financing effort between ODOT Preservation, ODOT Safety, TRAC, and ODOT Major Rehabilitation. The transformation is poised to provide a lasting impact on the regional economy by improving transit efficiency and safety.
