In a recent development in Summit County Court, a woman has been slated for sentencing in the homicide of an Akron mother that occurred last year. According to Cleveland19, 26-year-old Corvette Pope entered a guilty plea to charges of involuntary manslaughter and obstructing justice in the killing of 24-year-old Paige Calich. Corvette's sentencing is expected to take place on Monday.
The incident, which took a grim toll on Calich and left her surviving three-year-old son unharmed, culminated in Calich's body being discovered with a gunshot wound to the chest in a residence on Socrates Place. Meanwhile, Denzel Pope, Corvette’s younger brother, received a jury conviction on August 8. The verdict found Denzel guilty of murder and felonious assault, as well as possession of weapons under disability. Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich underscored the gravity of the crime, stating, "Denzel Pope’s senseless cruelty has taken away a mother, a sister, and a daughter, and he cannot run from his crimes any longer," in a statement obtained by cleveland.com.
The prosecution described that the violent episode was preceded by a conflict between Corvette Pope and Calich at the Summit Lake apartments. Roughly two hours subsequent to the altercation, Corvette, accompanied by Denzel, confronted Calich at her own apartment, as reported by cleveland.com. Denzel Pope's sentencing is set for August 15 following his conviction, which includes two counts of murder with a three-year firearm specification – an unclassified felony, two counts of felonious assault with a similar specification – a second-degree felony, and one count of having weapons while under disability – a third-degree felony, as noted by WKYC.
Kolkovich, in remembering Calich one year after her demise, expressed hope that the conviction would aid the bereaved family's healing process, saying, as obtained by WKYC, "Nothing can bring Paige back, but I hope this conviction helps her family continue to heal." The tragedy continues to cast a long shadow over the community, as the legal process strives to serve justice for the irreparable loss inflicted upon Calich's loved ones.
