Amtrak is stepping up its game with the launch of its NextGen Acela trains, servicing the busy Northeast Corridor. The upgraded trains come equipped with high-speed Wi-Fi, power outlets, improved seating configurations, and not to mention, can hit speeds of up to 160 mph thanks to their advanced tilt system. These improve passenger capacity by 27%, as reported by Railway News.

Speaking at Washington D.C.'s Union Station event, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy boasted about the new trains providing "more reliable service and lower prices for the American people." Despite the fact that are expected to increase Amtrak's profitability, as reported by CBS Boston, these trains seem like an accessible option for many travelers between Boston and Washington D.C. The initial rollout includes a modest cohort of five trains, with a full contingent of 28 expected by the year 2027.

"These trains are beautiful, they are fast, they are state of the art and they are American-made," Amtrak President Roger Harris said, as he introduced the trains that promise a boost in speed and a more modernized travel experience. Acknowledging the wear and tear on the old Acela fleet, Duffy welcomed the timely upgrade, adding that not only will the trains be faster with better pricing, but most importantly, the traveling public can expect a better experience, in a statement obtained by CBS Boston.

However, trains aren't the only focus of improvement. Duffy also announced plans to overhaul Washington D.C.'s Union Station under the rejuvenated stewardship of the Trump administration, taking over its management. Once a jewel in the crown of the nation's transport hubs, modernization plans for Union Station are vast, expected to address the roof, elevators, lighting, security, and other infrastructure elements to make the city safe and beautiful, as Duffy told the attendees at the event in a statement obtained by Railway News.

Amtrak's journey doesn't end here. The introduction of NextGen Acela is part of a larger fleet renewal strategy, which includes the future roll-out of Amtrak Airo trains for other East Coast services and updated locomotives for long-distance routes. Amtrak is setting a new standard for travel in the Northeast with policies that are indeed designed to enhance the overall commuting experience.
